the new me

If you are asking this question you probably DO know me.my name is mike i got to stevenson. i WORKED at the great escape where we sell pools and hottubs. i play the guitar , i skateboard, i voulenteer outside of school at the center for enriched living. we take care of adults and teens with mental disabilitys. i aspire to work for an advertising firm and to go to siue. my favorite bands are incubus and ludo, and house of heroes and the fratellis . i feel silence is only awkard because people make it awkard by not filing it . this , i think, is why people turn to blogging. its an impersonal way to tell the world what you think and display what you are working for. sociology teaches us that we dont know as much as we think we do and that is wy we have to work to get our lives straight.

monopo-ology?

when you look at a board game like monopoly you see not only a game but a mission to win and become the richest. but when the odds are changed, for some this game becomes one sided.

we adjusted the rules of monopoly to say that whoever was the horse was the richest and started out with the most money and boardwalk and park place. and they amount of money goes down to represent the different social class.

when playing it was easy to see that it is extremely difficult to move up in social class. and if you where rich you could buy anything and get out of jail when you wanted to .

these demographics are quite shocking and i think a really good way to sum it up is by the video created called Miniature Earth

crash

crash is one of my all time favorite moves. it really shows you how when placed into the worst of situations our true predujice comes out and makes us ugly. we cant controll it, its just how we deal with it.
like in the case of the locksmith... the autorney generals car is stolen and they have the locks changed. a latino mad is doing the work and the wife of the brendan frasier says " i want the locks changed in the morning cause i dont want that mexican guy selling our keys to his gang banger friends" . but in accuality this man could not be a nicer person. he is a great father and generally wonderful person

when we watched the episode of opra the man who played the tv producer talked about how when he was young his father was in line with his wife and kids to see santa. and him looking like a white man letting his black wife cut in front a man behind him asked how he could let a black person cut in front. and he stated that it was his wife . which led the man to attack him resulting in the mans death.

it all goes to show you that terrible things happen every day and that not for a long time will racsism ever be gone. everyone still has a secret dislike for another group be it black white mexican young old male female.

race-tastic

we all grow up with the sense of i am white you are black he is brown and so on. but the color of the persons skin does not sum up that person in any way shape or form. it is their upbringing and education. and when we assume that all African Americans steal or all Mexicans are lazy we are just using old stereotypes to make ourselves better.
now i do not mean that we should not be suspicious of a guy (black, white, or Mexican) comes up to you hiding something and following you. its just the situation. if you are approached by a person minding their own business there seems to be no reason to fear. but if they are acting strange then yes we should fear.

i too do sometimes walk the other way when a person wearing baggy clothing and being loud and annoying, and yes we all do the same thing. you cannot deny it..... I'm not racist i just admit my prejudice.

a different view on school

when we had a guest speaker from a school in rockford it really opend my eyes to the different education conditions. considering that it is so close to home.
he told us how his students where "gangster-fabolus" and expressed themselves in this way to be popular. he also talked about how thye really focused on more material possesions like rims and chains. but what shocked me more was that in a decent school the average act was quite low and the number of dropouts and number of people who didnt go on to college was shockingly low.
but it is safe to say that there is nothing really wrong in living in a small town and "surviving" in a tight nit community. but in our school at stevenson we strive on going to college and getting high paying jobs cause that is how we are brought up.

i just think that as long as you are happy with what you are doing you are richer that those who hate waking up everyday

social class....social profiling

in todays culture we are labeled based on our wealth. the more affluent you are the higher up on the social scale you are. life seems to be alot easier if you are higher up. you get the perks to get the loan to buy the house in the neighborhood to get your kids into the good public school where you pay higher taxes to get a better education, to get into a better school to get a good job to make alot of money to meet a spouse to have kids to raise them in a good neighborhood.... and so on. whereas if you are in the lower class you struggle to find work you get a low paying job where you can barely struggle to make ends meat to pay your rent to stay in your house then you have a child who grows up malnurished or lightly educated and in turn they drop out of highschool get a low paying job that they barely make ends meat in and you all struggle to survive... and this cycle perpetuates itself because of the direct money flow. rich people buy alot so we spend money to lure them into impulse buys and all this money is wasted for this event to occure. when we could be spending this money on better wealfare or better low income housing and most importantally better schools.

teen socialisation or teen boredom...

in the world of tens what are we really alowed to do... we cant drive till 16, but ciggaretts pornography, weapons, lottery tickets, see rated r movies, buy mature games, or even vote. so that leaves us with what... our imagination and crayons. i belive the biggest problem in america with drinking and car accidents is boredom. kids drink in excess where... at parties which usually involve marajuana ( which causes significantly less death) and liquor. so minus the factor of "weed" that leaves us with the "jesus juice" that causes theese problems. people drink then they drive then they die. so i belive that if we did lower the drinking age it would lessen the "forbidden fruit" argument and we could moniter drinking. people in bars are less likely to "drink themselves to death than others. so i pose it to you, do we allow kids to drink in an unsafe environment and end up drinking to much or do we allow them to go to bars and get tipsy to their little hearts desire but be safe??
